Saana Fell
Kilpisjärvi · Finland · Lapland
A 1,029-metre fell rising abruptly from the village of Kilpisjärvi at Finland's westernmost tip, where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. One of the most dramatic fell landscapes in Lapland — and one of the most accessible summit hikes.
Saana is what Lapland looks like in the imagination: a broad, flat-topped fell above the treeline, ringed by Arctic foxes and ptarmigan, with views over Lake Kilpisjärvi and the Norwegian border mountains. The ascent from Kilpisjärvi village takes 2–3 hours on a well-marked trail — steep in sections but requiring no technical skills. The summit plateau extends for several hundred metres and can hold snow well into June. On a clear day you can see the Halti massif (Finland's highest point, across the Norwegian border) and the Three-Country Cairn visible below. In autumn, Saana is one of the best places to see ruska — the Finnish fell autumn — when the birches and dwarf shrubs turn rust, gold, and crimson.
