Siida — Sami Museum and Nature Centre
Finland · Lapland · Inari
The national museum of Finnish Sami culture, on the shore of Lake Inari. The permanent collection traces 10,000 years of Sami life — from prehistoric hunting cultures to contemporary indigenous rights.
Siida occupies a striking modern building (2023 renovation by Halo Architects) that opens onto the Lake Inari shoreline. The permanent exhibition is one of the most comprehensive accounts of Sami cultural history in Scandinavia — not just artefacts but an immersive account of how the Sami people experienced landscapes, seasons, and the gradual pressure from the Finnish state. The outdoor section, open year-round, recreates traditional Sami settlement structures including turf huts, storage buildings, and a traditional tent. The museum also functions as the Inari region's nature information centre, with documentation on the area's flora, fauna, and changing climate. Essential context before exploring the parks and wilderness areas of the Inari region.
