Sami Heritage Trail: the world around Lake Inari

HeritageVisitEasy1–2 days

Three sites within reach of Inari village that together tell the 10,000-year story of Sami presence in the Finnish north — museum, wilderness church, and sacred island.

This is not a walking route but a sequence of visits, each requiring its own time and transport. Inari is the practical base: all three sites are accessible from the village within a single long day, or spread across two days if you want to give each one proper time.

Start: Siida Museum The logical beginning. Spend 2–3 hours in the permanent exhibition before going anywhere else — it provides the historical and cultural context that makes the other two sites legible. The outdoor section is best visited last.

Then: Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church A 10 km hike from the Inari road — allow 3 hours for the return journey at a relaxed pace. The trail head is signposted from the main road south of Inari. The church itself is small, locked (the key is available from the Inari church office), and austere. The isthmus setting between two lakes is the point.

End: Ukko Island, Lake Inari Guided boat tours from Inari village to the sacred island of Ukko run in summer (check the Siida website for schedule). The island was the most important Sami sacrificial site in the Inari region, used until the 18th century. The tour takes approximately 2 hours.
